I am normally a very ethical person. As I get older I start to realize how straight and narrow I tend to be. I am also surprised at the adults around me at times and their lack of ethics on the big and the small things in life. I try not to judge, but I am very surprised at times.
I don’t lie about my kids’ age to save money. If I bring an extra kid to the pool, I don’t try to sneak them in on my pass if I’m one girl down. I don’t lie to get my kids on Facebook or on a ”better” team. I don’t cheat or steal. Okay, there are some little lies like “If you do that again I’m going to hang you up by your big toe and beat you silly.” I’m lying there, that will never happen as I am not strong enough to pick my kids up by the big toe anymore.
The times I have not followed my conscience I have paid the price. I’ve called off sick twice in my life when I wasn’t ill and I ended up with stress headaches and the day did not go as planned.
Before you think I’m sounding very high and mighty I must confess about an issue that causes me a problem. You see I sneak snacks into the movie theater at times. Not only do I sneak things in, I have taught my kids to sneak them in as well. Here is the thing. I DON’T FEEL GUILTY about this. I honestly don’t. I could complain about the cost of refreshments, and often do, on top of movie tickets for a family of six and act like it is the theater’s fault for making me be a criminal, but I cannot justify this nasty little habit of mine. I can remember bringing a pizza into a theater once in high school. I just turned it side-ways and zipped it up in my winter coat. People were not happy with smelling pizza through the movie I can tell you!
I thought I was done with my wave of crime when Hubby and I first got married. We loved to see back to back movies and back then didn’t care what movie we saw, we just liked everything. We would eat before or after the shows at home, very rarely buying popcorn. Then we had kids. Then we had more kids. Kids don’t do the whole lets skip popcorn and just eat at home thing very well. I often will bribe them with ice cream before or after a movie as it saves money and is a fun snack, but more often lately we just bring in our own stuff.
I have told the kids that we are not supposed to bring in our own stuff, but mommy does it to save money. In the back of my head my conscience screams at me things like They will never know what rules to follow now! and You are a hypocrite! So I’m a bit hard on myself about this, but at the end of the day I know I will do it again and again.
Do you sneak in treats? Have you ever been caught? That is a big fear of mine and I will fall to my knees in shame I’m sure of it.
