Our world is colorful and we need to embrace the colors, learn from the past, improve our future.  How boring would a color-blind world be?  I feel that Celebrating Black History Month does not belittle, undermine or replace other cultures or heritages.  It simple lets us learn and in turn see our world as amazing.

Scholastic has once again provided me with some great books for Black History Month!   I will review them for you, share with the girls’ classrooms and keep at least one of them for my home library.  While I believe you can never have to  many books, my bookshelves are bursting a bit :)

photo (4)My favorite is a beautiful hard-back by Henry Cole, UNSPOKEN: A Story From the Underground Railroad.  The illustrations are amazingly simple sketchings that make a huge impact.  My favorite thing about this book though is that there are no words!  It is wonderful to let kids come up with their own words from the pictures. This book is staying in my family library! The story is one of a young girl finding a hidden runaway slave in her barn, showing her kindness and then have kindness returned to her. Perfect for younger kids learning that what they do matters and that kindness begets kindness.

photo (3)I Am Martin Luther King, Jr illustrated by Elisabeth Alba and I Am Harriet Tubman illustrated by Ute Simon were both written by Grace Norwich are amazing new biographies aimed for third and fourth graders.  I know that there are other biographies on these people, but I really like this new format. The pictures/illustrations have a current feel to them, there is a pictorial index of the different people the reader will meet in the story and at the end a feature called “10 More Things That Are Pretty Cool To Know”.  My fifth grader grabbed these immediately to see if they are AR for school and thankfully the Martin Luther King Jr one is worth 2.0 points, I couldn’t find Harriet Tubman’s but I found several more in the series so my guess is that it is so new it is not on the list yet.  These will be donated to the class room, once I get through them.

photo (8)I Survived The Battle of Gettysburg, 1863 by Laren Tarshis. This is one in a series of I survived, also featuring 9/11 and the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.  It is a level 4 reading book.Action packed the story tells of Thomas and his little sister running away from slavery and meeting up with Union troops to make it North.

photo (6)The final book  I want to review is Jackie Robinson: American Hero by Sharon Robinson. I love the fact that it was written by  his daughter. This book is full of family photographs and goes in depth on Robinson’s story, while not getting to heavy for the age group it is focused at (2nd-4th graders).  While the story of oppression and bigotry is in the book, the successes of Jackie Robinson is in the forefront of the story.

ngscd_patchMy house is Girl Scout Cookie central this time of year. I have three girls selling, two troop storing cookies in my garage, and cookie questions coming at me from all directions.

February 8th is National Girl Scout Cookie Day celebrating what a cookie can do!  Girl Scout Cookies started out as a way for Girl Scouts to raise money for scouting activities.  Decades later, the cookies are still going strong, and I have to say that a Girl Scout Cookie is so much more than a cookie.

Cookie time is when our scouting girls are setting goals, learning about customer service, learning money handling skills and advertising. They are learning about manners and safety. They are also having fun and raising money for trips, uniforms, snacks and service projects.

Want to win 5 boxes of cookies?  Simply leave a comment telling me what your favorite kind of Girl Scout cookie is.  My girls are selling Thin Mints, Samoas, Do-Si-Dos, Thank U Berry Munch, Trefoils, Tagalongs and Lemon Chalets.  If you don’t win, you can always buy from us ;)

For an extra entry tweet @GirlScouts #onemorebox and come back here and let me know you tweeted.

Winner will be picked via Random.org on February 9th.

Happy National Girl Scout Cookie Day February 8th!

Congrats to Comment #14 :)

(Disclosure: I was asked to blog about National Girl Scout Cookie Day and received no compensation for this. I just really support Girl Scouts and plan to break my gluten-free diet for just a few cookies this year!)

Our 2012 Christmas Season In Pictures

Our 2012 Christmas Season In Pictures

This is the obligatory New Year post that a blogger must do.  I’ll try and make it interesting.  Looking at last year’s New Year post I had a few goals. One was to work more and I accomplished that. Another one was to learn how to use my camera better…Didn’t happen. In fact I broke one of my lenses this year.  So what are my goals for 2013?  To learn how to use my camera better and to get moving again while I continue to become healthier (and gluten-free).

Things I learned in 2012

Hawaii is more amazing than I ever imagined and I would love to be LOST there!

Surgery really takes a toll on my body…but my B cups are worth it!

I’m allergic to paper tape?  Who would have thought!

Wheat does my body bad….and I feel so good without it!

Going back to college wasn’t nearly as painful as I thought it would be!

My girls are growing up and I cannot do a thing to stop it!

Hopes for 2012

I hope to find a church I really like and attend regularly with the family.

I hope to continue going to Muskingum’s online RN-BSN program part-time and knock this degree out of the way.

I want to keep working on balance in my life.

I hope my Mom continues to respond well to her treatments and continues to improve.

I hope my Dad gets a work assignment closer to home.

I hope I yell less at the kids.

I hope the kids yell less at me.

I hope the dog stops peeing all over the place.

I hope I start running again.

I’m sure I hope for more, this is just what I have come up with.

I wasn’t able to reach my reading goal of 75 books this year. School work go in the way and I amended it to 60 books.  Next year I think I’ll allow for school work and set my goal at 50 books. I did finish my Adoption Reading Challenge though and read six books about or containing an adoption theme!

With snow on the ground and the kids sledding outside everyday I look forward to 2013 and all the amazing things it will bring.  I’m sure there will be tough things that come up, but right now the future looks bright!

I love the anticipation that Christmas Eve brings.  I love it more than Christmas morning. Christmas morning goes by way to fast, though it is full of joy, and I love the squirming the kids do on Christmas Eve!

Plans tonight include church, a fire and an early bedtime for the kids so Santa has time to work his magic.

Have you heard that the Good Old Days were perfect?  Nothing bad ever happened back then. People respected others and all was peaceful.

Newsflash!  The Good Old Days never happened.  I’ve had this discussion with many people who claimed they did and while I have respect for them and their experience, I protest.  It’s normal to only remember the pleasant things.   We must, however, not make the mistake of making only our good memories historical fact.

The other night we attended a wonderful Christmas Concert for the middle school.  We paused at the beginning with a moment of silence for the victims of  Friday’s shooting at Sandy Hook.  The principle, who is a nice guy and cares about the kids in his charge, said that this happened because we took God out of our schools.  Most of the crowd clapped for him.  I did not clap. I may have irreverently rolled my eyes actually.  Not out of disrespect for him, but at the fallacy that kids saying a generic prayer everyday at school was going to make sure that a shooter would not make it in the school building. The Good Old Days of school prayer were not perfect and I wish people would remember that.

I must disclose that I am a Christian. I pray. I teach my kids to pray. I have a prayer I say every day when my kids go off to school that includes a plea to bring them home safely to me. I am also happy that my kids can pray at school. Yes, they can pray at school. They can pray silently, they can pray out loud. They can hold a Bible study before and after school. They can say a prayer at an event or graduation.  Student-led prayer is allowed.  Government-led prayer is not allowed.

Back to the Good Old Days.  In 1962 schools stopped school-sanctioned prayer.  Let’s look at a few things that were going on during the years we had school prayer:

Up until 1954 it was legal schools to racially segregate schools.   Two of my  children would have had to go to different schools than my other two children, not because of age, but because of skin color.  Those same two children wouldn’t have been allowed to be adopted by us at that time because of race.  Those same two children would have had to use the back door and a different bathroom and water fountain in parts of this country.  This did not please God, I am sure of that.

What happened when high school girls became pregnant?  They were socially stigmatized (unlike the boys who fathered the babes in most circumstances), sent away to be coerced in surrendering their babies to closed adoption, urged to never think about their babies, or forced to marry the father even if it wasn’t the best situation for them.  This did not please God. I am sure of that.

Were there drug abusers in our schools back then? Yes.  Did kids participate in underage drinking back then? Yes. Was there inequality between the sexes back then? Yes.   Until the 60′s my girls would not have school sports to join.  Where there bullies back then?  Yes. Where there ineffective teachers back then? Yes.  Did all kids have the same opportunity to go to college back then? No.  Hmmmm. All of these things were happening with prayer in schools.  We just didn’t acknowledge it as a society or we had the old boys will be boys attitude that wasn’t so helpful if you were a girl.

There has always been psychologically imbalanced people who harm others. There has always been that evil in the world.  What has changed is not that prayer was taken out of schools but technology.  We now know of all the bad things that happen as soon as they happen, it is in our faces constantly on the TV, in our phones and on our computers.  We have a larger population which leads to more people who do horrific acts.   We glorify violence in our entertainment as humans always have, but now have hand held machines with amazing graphics to play out our pretend violence.  We have newer modes of acting out.  We have guns that we didn’t have 50 years ago because of advances in technology.  Technology, like all things, can be used in good and bad ways.  The gun that protects our country also can also kill our country’s children. The TV that tells us to prepare for a bad storm, can also spew propaganda and trashy tabloid news.

I will not go into the discussion of how we can prevent another Sandy Hook in this post.  I will not talk about mental health care or  first and second amendment issues.  I feel one brewing, but right now I just want to provoke people to think passed the  rhetoric of school prayer’s removal being the cause of all bad things that now happen in the United States.  Our nation is not perfect now, just as it wasn’t then.  We must push through this wave of whimsy of the Good Old Days and Prayer in Schools and come up with real solutions.

In the waiting room for my first Mammogram.

I got my first Mammogram not to long ago.  A few years earlier than normally recommended thanks to my breast reduction surgery.  I recently learned that after breast reduction it is common to have issues with scar tissue and other  stuff can come up in years to follow.  Hmmm. The surgeon never mentioned that piece of knowledge. I would have had it done anyway and have no regrets, but the thought of having lumps and bumps pop up the next few decades will not be an easy roller coaster to ride.

The cape they have you wear is quite fairy like and pink so you feel quite childish and in need of a wand.  The room is dark, warm and hummmms.

The technician constantly apologizes for the discomfort…I can only imagine how many times a day she says her sorries.

So I got squished and it wasn’t bad.  I have little feeling in my left breast, it feels like it’s asleep or numb and my right has diminished feeling as well, so I don’t feel like I a normal person.  It was odd and awkward, but really peaceful and I got to see my breasts from the inside which is always fun.  Well, fun for me.

Then I had the ultrasound. I almost feel asleep as the room was dark and the gel was warm. Again, not a bad thing.  When they move the ultrasound pictures around it looks like a lunar surface…

Two procedures that are simple and not horrible, but lifesaving. So please. Go do it.

All light-hearted-ness aside. I know that when some of us get these procedures they are because you have found a lump and the stress is quite horrible.  I wish no one had to get a mammogram. But we do. There are ways to get free ones if you cannot afford it, talk with your health care provider or call your local American Cancer Society.

Get the girls looked at.

Do it for you.

The Things You Take For Granted

 Someone Else is Praying For

As I sit here awake at 2 in the morning this Thanksgiving I wish I had something profound to say.  I do not, so I will share a quote I found on Pinterest (credit unknown) that I like to read occasionally.

I am thankful…

My children are healthy

My husband is a great father, a good man and a loving spouse

I have food, water, shelter, sanitation and health care all at my fingertips

I have both my parents with me and a full extended family to have fun with and complain about

My mother in law loves me and I love her

I have a job that I get immense  joy and satisfaction with

I am able to continue my education and make sure my girls get the best education there is to offer

I am a voter with a say

I have friends who are dear

I’ve gotten healthy this year and feel great

and most of all my internet is fast.

Okay. Some things are just a luxury, but I am thankful for them all the same.

Have a great day, eat some gluten for me.

Remember what you are thankful for.

Thankfulness is contagious.

A couple of weeks ago I was playing around taking pictures of the leaves and Elle came out to pose for me.  Not long after Meg and Mita run out of the house to cause ciaos play with their little sis.  The following pictures show how things turned out. Lots of whining, fake crying, some laughter all equaling a typical evening at our house!

Elle hamming it up feeling pretty good.

Meg realizing she had work to do tormenting her little sis.

It begins.

Mita joins in (yes we wear a lot of pajamas around here!)

Thirteen and a bit full of herself!

Total obnoxiousness!

Total Fun!

I love Mita’s grin in this one.

My fall leaves pictures may not be the traditional ones with matching outfits and perfect smiles, but at this point I’m just glad my camera battery was charged! Enu was out of the house that day, I didn’t forget her ;)

So my mom didn’t like my first card very well. She has a good sense of humor so maybe I pushed it a bit. I decided to make another card to be on the safe side. Some of you will still get the first card….I find it quite funny really!

Way back in late August I went on an elimination diet.  No gluten, no sugar, no dairy, no caffeine ..no anything your grandma wouldn’t have had in her cupboard!  It was not as hard as I thought it would be.  I also upped my vitamins, minerals and the good bacteria for my gut.  After three weeks I started adding some caffeine and very little real sugar, but stayed on the no gluten and no dairy.

After my elimination time was up I added a bit of gluten and turned into a nasty, grumpy, gassy person.  I added some dairy about a week after my gluten experiment,  I did okay.  I had a bad stomach ache after having straight milk, but no issues with cheese. Lovely cheese. My best friend cheese :)

So now what I do?  I’m off gluten for sure.  I haven’t had a Dr. Pepper since August and hope to stay Dr. Pepper free.  I’ll add some cheese here and there, but I am trying to go light on the dairy.

My results.  While I don’t weigh myself, I estimate that I have lost about 20 pounds and two jean sizes. My belly isn’t puffy and my face looks lean.  I feel better, sleep better, am less of a grump and have energy.

I encourage everyone who has issues with not feeling great to try the elimination diet. See what your body is reacting to.  Honestly, it wasn’t that hard and it can really make some great changes.

No one asked me to write about this and I am getting no money for it!  I just wanted to share :)

A memory that my dad still laughs about is one that makes Meg shake her head.

Meg was about three years old and we were re-siding our house.  At this age Meg was quite the songstress and would sing often and perform for us with dance.  One day I was in my room putting away laundry and Meg was singing in her room.  When I was finished I walked into my singing darling’s room and saw her dancing.  Naked. In front of her window. With a workman on a ladder putting up siding and laughing his head off.

Thankfully she has outgrown the naked dancing thing!

Six people in the house.

Four girls who change clothes repeatedly.

I’m going to start counting loads of laundry. I may even issue bills.  I won’t get paid of course. I won’t even get a nod of thanks.  I’ll probably even get a roll of an eye or two.

I’m going to count anyway.

I started my on-line classes this week!  I am working towards my BSN, which is the four year nursing degree.  I currently an RN with a two-year degree. For years, decades even, the powers that be have warned us that someday we had to get our four year degree.  The time has come and here I go!

This semester I am taking Human Genetics and Transitions in Professional Nursing. So far I am pretty excited and I am right on track..of course it is day four!

I wasn’t sure how I would learn from an on-line class, but I  have noticed that my self-discipline has improved in the last 14 years and I can focus more and just get things done.  I even started next week’s assignment.  I’m such an overachiever!

Part of me did not want to share my Christmas Cards to everyone this early. I wanted you to laugh when you opened them up from the mail.   Then I realized that this way you may get two laughs out of the card and I get $10 from Shutterfly for sharing. Win, Win, Win!

A few months ago I posted my review of Snow White & The Huntsman. Universal just recently sent me a preview copy of the movie’s new DVD coming out in on the 11th.  The Extended Edition is pretty awesome I must say and as always I  love getting the Digital copy for the kids to have on their various apple toys.  Of course this movie is PG-13 so only my two older girls will have access to it.

Here’s a link to the trailer if you have yet to watch the movie. The HD sound and picture is just beautiful.  I haven’t yet played with the pocket Blu App that gives you the opportunity to play with new features, but I’m sure the kids will get to it before me!

On September 11th the DVD is released and will be available at Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon and many other places.  It looks like the costs will be from $17.99 to $24.96 depending on if you get the DVD or Blu-Ray.

(Disclosure:  I received a free pre-view copy of the about DVD from Universal Studios Home Entertainment in exchange for my honest thoughts and opinions.)

I have been known to lose things of late.  A couple of years  ago I lost my keys and they showed up  months later thanks to Kroger.  Months ago I left my wallet in a Starbucks, two hours away.  Not things I am proud of, but it is what it is.

Yesterday my mom got a call from our local Walmart.  They asked for me and told her that I had left an ID card at Walmart and they were keeping it in the pharmacy for me to come and get.  We couldn’t figure out why they called her number or what it was that I had lost unknowingly.

Today, after work, I popped by Walmart.  At the pharmacy I let them know that I had received a call saying I had lost an ID card.  I went on to mention that I wasn’t sure what it was I had lost, that I wasn’t missing anything.  The lady smiled at me and said:

“President Snow will not be happy.”

Uhhh, okay crazy Walmart pharmacy lady…think…think…think…Oh my gosh…

I had lost my Hunger Games ID card. My District 11 card of Panem fell out of my wallet when I was shopping.  It was turned into the pharmacy where all the employees were trying to figure out what kind of ID card it was.  The helpful crazy Walmart Pharmacy lady was a citizen of District 6.  She said she wanted to help me out anyway and thought this was hilarious.  They looked up my name and birthday in the pharmacy system and found my mom’s number as the last time I had used that pharmacy was eight years ago when I was pregnant with Elle and living with my parents after selling our house and waiting to move into our new one.

I told her my kids where going to love this story and they did!

Yes, I am referring to Pinterest again. I do not spend all day on it I swear! SWEAR! The above quote seemed appropriate for the current climate of politics, guns and chicken nuggets.

My mind, heart and patience tend to become overtaxed when I hear of injustices, cruelty and just plain stupid-ass violence.  As a general role I don’t talk big topics with those around me.   I just need to live my life, be an example for my kids and let them know my values and the values I want them to have and demonstrate.

I don’t listen to loud unless it’s my radio.  I will speak up when I have to. I will gladly converse with rationale people who don’t agree with me, but I will not yell or post every thought I have ever thought of to all around me.

That is all.

I thought I was done blogging about my breast reduction surgery, but yesterday I went to see my surgeon for the last time for a normal follow-up appointment.  His parting questions made me pause….

“Do you  want your pictures?” Asks Dr. Breast.

“What pictures?” I say rather stupidly.

“Your before and after. A lot of women like to have them.” States Dr. Breast.

“Oh, okay, but I won’t look at them, just store them away in case I ever need them.” I tell him (Like he cares, he isn’t a shrink!)

I found myself waiting in the waiting room for my nude pictures.  The nurse hands them to me in a manilla envelope. Hmmm. I must mark these so no-one opens them.  Then I put them in the car with me and went on to do my million errands I find myself doing when I am in the vicinity of a Target (side note: The nearest Target is an hour away from us….it’s horrible I know.).

Once I got home I decided to put the envelope on the bottom of one of my dresser drawers.  Of course my mind quickly goes to things like If I die, whoever goes through my drawers will open these and Maybe my after pictures are really hot and I want to see them.

So I looked. BIG MISTAKE What an eye-opening and thoughtful experience.

Before I tell you more I must clue you in on what the photography session is like. There is no empowering mood music.  You are not warned before hand to wear something non-muffin-toppy.  The doctor taking the pix purposefully cuts your head out of the picture and you are up against a boring blue or brown backdrop.  awkward!  Do I smile? Do I talk? Do I close my eyes and hope to die right then and there….I did the third option.

The in-office printer photos are cold and lifeless, just like the look of my pale and nasty skin in my before pictures.  The after pictures look straight from a morgue with suture lines as bright as the burning coals of a fire.  Not good for my self-esteem.

I mentioned this to my mom and she went off on a rant about how she she first saw me with my bandages off she wanted to scream “What did you do to my daughter!?”. She then went on to say how I looked like Frankenstein and then agreed that my wounds had a morgue-esk look to them. Wow mom. Thanks for lying to me at the time, as I couldn’t have handled your truths!

My scars are slowly fading, I am so happy I had the surgery and feel so much better.  I wasn’t a nude model before and I won’t be after, so whats a few scars for the sake of my health right?  Needless to say I have warnings on the manilla envelope now with strict instructions that they are to be destroyed if I leave this earth pre-maturely.  I am keeping them for medical records only, as my surgeon is moving to Illinois so I thought I should keep them close.   Not the nude pictures one would expect a wife to keep in her drawers!

Monopoly by flashlight.

If I had missed today’s post I would have had a great excuse, but I am glad I get to finish off the month as planned.  I almost didn’t get to yell my success over posting everyday in June, but here I am an hour and a half before midnight writing my June 30th post!

We had horrible wind/tornado storms rip through her last night. Scary stuff, but thankfully my family and I are safe with just a few trees down and no electricity for a while.  I just got my electric back on, but my parents are still without as are many, many thousands of others.  Hubby and the girls got off early this morning for their camping trip and made good driving time (going to Colorado with Uncle and two nephews….sixagainsttwo would be the name of that blog!).

I feel I stretched myself a bit and made myself write some things that were whirling around in my head, I also had a few really boring days.  Such is life though and the exercise was a success in my eyes.

So, please remind me not to do NoPoBloMo again the next time I decide to push myself!

No jumping on the trampline until the wires are fixed!

Thankfully missed the neighbor’s house!

The kids in St. Louis.

A couple of months ago my mom-in-law and I took the girls to see Mirror Mirror starring Julia Roberts and Lily Collins.  A fun re-make of the traditional Snow White story that makes Snow White a bit less clueless and more courageous. She saves the prince if you don’t mind me giving a spoiler.

All four girls loved it and so did us adults.  One of the cool things in the movie is the song “I believe in Love” sung by Collins (yes, her dad is Phil Collins). It is catchy and makes you want to dance, here is a free download of the song (I don’t know how long it will be offered btw).  Some fun online extras can be found at the Mirror Mirror site. There is a dressing room where the kids can design dresses, a Mad-Lib type word game and you can download some coloring pictures!

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment just sent me a DVD/Digital Download/Blu-Ray Mirror Mirror to have for the house. The kids are thrilled as it is just in time for the long trip to Colorado (leaving soon). I have never done digital download before, but once I realized I needed to have iTunes open, it was very easy to upload onto my account.  Now the kids have the movie on their iPod touches and can watch it again whenever they want.  I think the digital downloading option is going to catch on in this house.

If you haven’t yet seen the movie, or saw the movie and want to see it again the movie was released a few days ago on June 26th.  The flick is rated PG and has the Dove.org seal of approval for families.

Enu and Mita. Mita would only pose with the prince :)

I told them to act like Witches. Only Enu did. Makes for a funny pic :)

(Disclosure: I got a free copy as I mentioned above in exchange for my honest opinon of the movie.)

If some little person asks me one more time to put in my password so they can upload the latest and greatest App (fart app anyone?) I will scream!  I’m being a responsible parent and monitor every app they apply to their iPad, iPod Touch and Kindle Fire.  Every time I turn around they need me to do something with this great technology of theirs.

If you all have any suggestions let me know, but I will not give them access to my credit card and I need to know what they are accessing.  Any hints appreciated!

Here are some shots from my adventures in archery from Girl Scout Day Camp this week.  I taught archery for 2 days to over 120 girls (a few boys) and I  have the sunburn to prove it!  It was very hot and I was only able to do it because my big girl Meg helped me like a trooper. She didn’t complain and worked very hard getting a lot of first time archers  a fun start. Thank you Miss Meg.

My goal was to do a Brave theme for the little ones and Hunger Games for the older ones.  I was so busy I didn’t get too much into the theme, but the little ones did pose for pics with a Brave backdrop and the older ones stood in the weeds/trees and took some Katniss shots.

It is fun to watch the girl power pump up as they learn to aim and shoot the targets.   A few school around her offer archery with compound bows, so the girls got to learn a bit about shooting with a recurve bow.   I like the recurve myself as it has an oldfashioned feel to it.

If you have never tried archery I recommend it highly. It’s fun and empowering and not super competitive, unless you want it to be!

I’m having issues with my Internet.  The modem, the wireless, the router thingy.  Hubby is working full gear to get it back up after the cable guy left a new modem.  I was going to post about my two days of archery, but it will have to wait until tomorrow.  Not liking this blog from a phone thing :(. Damn NoPoBloMo;)

I don’t know what I would do without Hubby win these technical issues. I’d have the geek squad out at least once a month.  Its good to have my man around and I appreciate all he does for me!

Last night Hubby and I went to our local Art Museum’s fundraiser. It was a garden party outside with great food, an auction and lots of flowers. Today there was a tour for several local homeowner’s gardens. Flowers are something that my mom loves, so I took her and left Hubby at home (with his enthusiastic thanks;).

While I’m not a gardener and have no great desire to become one, I do appreciate other people’s gardens.  People are so very talented, it blows my mind how they make a simple back yard into a restful, wonderland where people want to live forever.

I took my camera along and grabbed a few shots to share with you.

This local artist made a scarecrow of herself and used random mirrors in her garden.

This bee totally ignored me and the waterfall behind it.

A fun decoration made with a glass, flower marbles, and artificial flower and a straw. Very cute.

I had never made Rice Crispy treats before, so  I was relieved that it was so easy!  Elle decorated it and gave it to her two friends having a Star Wars party. I used the R2D2 cake pan I bought the other day!  Fun :)

I know you have heard me say (or read me write?) that I hate crafts.  Well, I have been up to my ears in crafting of late. The girls were making things for the county fair.

All four of them made re-usable bags from old T-shirts and duct tape. Very cute and very handy. We are giving them out as gifts for friends with birthdays also and that saves some dough as well as being green.  I saw the following video and got the idea. The duct tape makes the bag strong and you can put wet bathing suits in the bag as well. Very handy.

The girls also made pillows out of T-shirts, that were no-sew, just tying knots.  Very easy and helped Elle especially learn how to tie good knots.

Meg printed out her blog to enter and took her iPad to show the judge her live blog.  Mita also made wallet out of duct tape.

My favorite was Enu’s Puppy Chow project. She made chex mix puppy chow and put it in a dog bowl and we ate it as a snack when we toured the local Animal Shelter and then gave the staff the snack and the bowl along with our other donations.  As the fair doesn’t let you take real food, she made a poster of her making the chow.   She then made some more puppy chow for the judge to taste.

Needless to say, my talented girls are the owners of several new blue ribbons and I am done with crafts for a while. Especially after our Angry Birds game that we also made this week!

The other day when awaiting for Snow White and the Huntsman to start I saw a preview for the movie Rock of Ages.  From the first notes of Pour Some Sugar on Me I knew I would have to see this movie.  Then it happened…Tom Cruise showed up on the screen singing Bon Jovi.

The wrongness of it all cannot be put into words.   How that scrawny little arrogant man got into this movie….arghhh. I had to see it anyway.

Tonight my sis-in-law, my mom and I dined without kids and went to see the movie of my junior high/high school years.  It was a fun movie.  Silly at times, outrageous at other times.  Gross. definitely gross at times, but it is a movie about Rock and Roll.

So Mr. Cruise didn’t do a bad job. In fact, while his voice was no Joe Elliott, he didn’t butcher the anthems either. He also showed the craziness that comes with intense fame.  He strutted around like Axel Rose with his chest puffed out and was so not good-looking, but many rock stars aren’t good-looking they are just famous and rich.

The singing, dancing and acting was very Mama Mia, and that is what made the movie so fun.  The citizens fighting against rock and roll reminded me of watching  Tipper Gore on TV talking about needing a rating system for music when I was a young teen.  Twenty-some years later I thank her for that as it makes my parenting a bit easier, but at the time all I remember was thinking who names their kid Tipper and why does she hate my music! I never knew that I would vote for her husband someday.  Time is funny that way.

I loved watching the movie show the transition of the hair band peak into boy bands coming to the forefront. It reminded me that my brother and I, only two years apart, had a big difference in musical taste.  He loved MC Hammer and I took him to a Vanilla Ice concert (and hated it btw).  Thank goodness grunge came to redeem him or he would still be running around in those pants!

If you were a rock child of the eighties go and see this movie.  You’ll have fun, sing along and feel like feathering your hair!   They played about four Def Leppard songs, some Bon Jovi, Poison, Warrent, Journey and more.  Good stuff.

We bought our snacks for this show I swear!

I am normally a very ethical person.  As I get older I start to realize how straight and narrow I tend to be.  I am also surprised at the adults around me at times and their lack of ethics on the big and the small things in life. I try not to judge, but I am very surprised at times.

I don’t lie about my kids’ age to save money. If I bring an extra kid to the pool, I don’t try to sneak them in on my pass if I’m one girl down.  I don’t lie to get my kids on Facebook or on a ”better” team. I don’t cheat or steal.  Okay, there are some little lies like “If you do that again I’m going to hang you up by your big toe and beat you silly.”  I’m lying there, that will never happen as I am not strong enough to pick my kids up by the big toe anymore.

The times I have not followed my conscience I have paid the price.  I’ve called off sick twice in my life when I wasn’t ill and I ended up with stress headaches and the day did not go as planned.

Before you think I’m sounding very high and mighty I must confess about an issue that causes me a problem.  You see I sneak snacks into the movie theater at times. Not only do I sneak things in, I have taught my kids to sneak them in as well. Here is the thing.  I DON’T FEEL GUILTY about this.  I honestly don’t.  I could complain about the cost of refreshments, and often do, on top of movie tickets for a family of six and act like it is the theater’s fault for making me be a criminal, but I cannot justify this  nasty little habit of mine.  I can remember bringing a pizza into a theater once in high school. I just turned it side-ways and zipped it up in my winter coat.  People were not happy with smelling pizza through the movie I can tell you!

I thought I was done with my wave of crime when Hubby and I first got married. We loved to see back to back movies and back then didn’t care what movie we saw, we just liked everything.  We would eat before or after the shows at home, very rarely buying popcorn. Then we had kids.  Then we had more kids.  Kids don’t do the whole lets skip popcorn and just eat at home thing very well.  I often will bribe them with ice cream before or after a movie as it saves money and is a fun snack, but more often lately we just bring in our own stuff.

I have told the kids that we are not supposed to bring in our own stuff, but mommy does it to save money.  In the back of my head my conscience screams at me things like They will never know what rules to follow now! and You are a hypocrite!  So I’m a bit hard on myself about this, but at the end of the day I know I will do it again and again.

Do you sneak in treats? Have you ever been caught?  That is a big fear of mine and I will fall to my knees in shame I’m sure of it.

I had my breast-reduction surgery at the end of February. It has been about four months now.  Since my surgery was boob related I think people are tentative to ask me about it. Or they just don’t care. If you don’t care, that is fine with me! Read my blog tomorrow ;)

The first ten days were the worst. I hurt. A lot.  I also hated the way percocet made me feel. I couldn’t move my arms very far, reach or put a shirt on.  Hubby had to help me walk steady the first day and spent the first two nights on the living room floor while I slept in his easy chair. I didn’t go back to my own bed for almost 7 days and even then ended up in a chair by morning.  On day five I had horrible hot flashes, full body sweats and digestive issue. I am pretty sure my body was getting rid of the anesthesia. Not fun at all.

The first two weeks I was pretty sure I had made a bad decision in getting the surgery. I couldn’t drive, carry things or participate in my normal daily activities.

Now. Four months later I am very glad I went through the surgery. I am still surprised at how small my breasts are. I really didn’t want B cups, but now I have them. They aren’t bad, just small.

What do I love about my body now? I can wear cute summer dresses, go bra-less with certain shirts. I don’t need layers to hold the girls down and I bought a swim suit off the rack!  The divits in my shoulders gone. I got two therapeutic massages and my back muscles feel great and my spine is healthy.  I’ve had several people tell me that they never noticed by breasts being that large.  My answer is that I hid them well.  I wore quality bras that held them up which cost a lot and had to be replaced often. The surgeon noted that I wore a correct sized bra, that is uncommon with most of his patients.  The right bra means everything to a heavy-chested woman.

I’m happy. I’m healed and now I just have to get my butt moving again and start running with this new body of mine!  I highly encourage a breast reduction if you are thinking about it and your insurance pays for most of it.  It is life changing!

I know there is no picture on this post.  I just don’t have one yet of me I’m happy with putting up yet!
