IMGP59972This week Meg is in her second children’s theater production.  They are preforming Suessical Musical and it looks to be a really great production! They have all worked hard, and I must say that Meg is going to be the best Hairdresser  Who there every was!

Taking some pictures of her, I realized that it will only be a few more years of her needing me to put on her makeup.  Granted this is stage makeup and quite heavy, but soon enough she will be putting makeup on daily and fussing over such things.IMGP5996IMGP59801I feel like I got a glimpse into the future the moment she asked to put on her mascara by herself.  Ten isn’t that old is it?  I still have time?  Right?!

Mita and Miley

Mita and Miley

I’ve officially earned the Bad Mom of the Year award…and it is only March.  I was just looking through my posts and realized that I did not write about Mita’s birthday.  My second baby in double digits and I did not share this with the world!!!

Celebrating your child’s birthday can be bittersweet as we watch them grow up so fast, and long for them to stop growing, yet we are so proud of what they are doing and who they are becoming.  This is our second birthday with Mita and she has changed so much in the last two years.  She is becoming a young lady with a beautiful smile and a shy heart.  I missed her first eight birthdays, but her Ethiopian mom and dad were there to watch her grow at that time.  Adoption makes your family bigger in so many ways, and I feel a special connection with her Ethiopian parents.  I am honored to have the privilege of watching her ninth and tenth birthday and feel so blessed that she is my girl.

On February 16th Mita turned ten.  There was no school that day and she had a couple of friends over for some fun.  Grammy made her a Miley Cyrus cake (I cringed at the thought, but I have been told not to make everything a battle :))  She got a new BLUE digital camera/MP3 player.  Blue is the best color in the world to my girls right now.  No more pink and princesses for them :(

1011257_dumpstersReduce, reuse, recycle.  These are familiar concepts to almost everyone now. What was once a mantra for “tree huggers” (a term my father still uses!) is now a way of life for many families, if not for environmental reasons, then for economical ones.

The other day I was feeling quite proud of myself.  Needing curtains for Mita and Enu’s rooms I shopped at Gabriel Brothers and dug for the matching curtains I needed.  I saved a lot of money with that little bit of digging.

Then Elle and I were off to the Good-Will to see what treasures we could stumble upon.  As we walked into the store Elle was confused as this was not the Good-Will she was familiar with.  I explained that I often dropped off things we didn’t need anymore at the Good-Will drop of near our house, and that the store we were going into was the place were every-ones donations were sold.  I then proceeded to over-explain  for my five year old’s age level and discussed how this was a form of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and it helped people find jobs.  Not thinking anymore about it, I went shopping and I scored some Timberland shoes for Elle at $1.99 and some brand new Girl Scout shirts for adults for $1.99 each.

The next day I was wearing my “new” Girl scout shirt when someone commented on it and said, “Where did you get that?”.  Before I could answer Elle jumped in and said,”My mom got it in the trash.”

So much for my lesson. All that fuzzy-good-for-me-feeling was gone as my attempts at being earth/people friendly were reduced to an episode of dumpster diving!

Looking Grand in Pink at Devil's Backbone!

Looking Grand in Pink at Devil's Backbone!

My dad gave me a great gift this month -his credits for a flight! I immediately knew I would go see my best friend Lisa in Colorado.

In our house Lisa is known at Aunt-Lisa-from-Colorado. She used to be Aunt-Lisa-from-California.  We use these names so we don’t get confused with Aunt-Lisa-who-is-married-to-Uncle-Jack (or now know more often as Aunt-Lisa-Nate-Isaac-and-Ali’s-mom).

Anyway…Aunt-Lisa-From-Colorado is my best friend from the seventh grade. We met on a cross-country team (yes, I used to run ;)) and have been friends ever since. We have seen each-other almost every year since my move from California to Ohio in high school. We have made it to weddings and baby-showers.   We have changed a lot, yet we still remain friends. Our friendship has even survived my voting for Obama in the last election!

We are now moms as well as adoptive moms.  We parent differently, yet appreciate each other’s ways.  We may go months without talking and then just pick up the conversation.  Seeing her again is as easy as breathing. Calling her a friend has been a privilege.  She is a great mom, wife, teacher and friend and her stories keep me laughing.

Thank you for a great weekend Lisa!  Thank you Daddy for giving me the opportunity to visit her and thank you Mom and Jackie for helping Hubby out with the kids!  Hubby, you are  the best and I so appreciate you.
