[...] As I talked about last year, a big argument in changing the kids’ lunches is that they will not eat the new lunches and their parents will pack them junk any way. I say, let them pack the junk. Let the parents make the kids mal-nourished, not the publicly funded schools. Tater tots were the veggie of the day.The apple is browned and uneaten because of it.The pizza is amazingly horrible!
After volunteering to help serve lunch at my son's school I started packing lunches.(Amazingly, he stopped coming home nearly everyday with an upset stomach!) Now that my daughter is in first grade and not eating very much because she is so picky I have arranged next year's schedule so that they will come home for lunch most everyday (we are very fortunate to have open campus and school is only 2 blocks away). I'm also trying to get away from so much processed food so this means lots more time in the kitchen for me but I hope it will be a worthwhile use of my time.

One idea to get your school to encourage fruits and veggies is to have a color week - each day is assigned a color and the kids are encouraged to bring a snack from home that is that color (i.e green - apple, grapes, celery etc.) The cafeteria also participates by including something on the lunch tray from that color. Make it fun for the kids by having a little competition - some reward for the classroom or grade with the most creative snack or the highest # of kids participating the key is to get the kids excited about it and have strong communication with the parents.
